An Appeal for Compassion
A Letter to the Australian Prime Minister from the father of Julian Assange 5 November 2018
The Honorable Scott Morrison MP
Prime Minister of Australia
Dear Prime Minster,
Julian Assange is my son. Julian's constantly deteriorating health and well being
after six years confined in the London Ecuadorian Embassy is of deepening concern and worry. Julian's family, friends and I are further distressed and anxious because Ecuador's government are
denying visitor access, use of telephone and have installed internet and cellular telephone jammers blocking telecommunications, committing Julian, for whom Ecuador has responsibility and duty of care, to extreme discomfort.
Dinah PoKempner, General Counsel of Human Rights Watch wrote, "Whether it agrees or not with what Julian Assange says, Ecuador denying him access to the internet as well as visitors is incompatible with its grant of asylum and looks more and more like solitary confinement".
Doctors Sondra Crasby, Brock Chisolm and Sean Love examined Julian and determined after six years confinement his health is clearly deteriorating and further confinement dangerous.
We face and expect permanent harm, contemplating with fearful anxiety, risk to life of our beloved son.
Over one year has passed since Sweden abandoned all allegations against Julian. The United Kingdom, where Julian traveled on Australian passport, continues refusing freedom to return home, obstructing simple resolution. It seems the United Kingdom hopes Julian falls gravely ill and can be seized from hospital while having life saving medical treatment.
Julian is the cherished and loved child of Australian parents, deeply missed and loved by his bereft Australian children, brothers and sister.
The United Nations Committee on Arbitrary Detention determined Julian is arbitrarily detained by the United Kingdom and Sweden stating release and compensation be given. Last year concerned citizens of Australia, quoting the Committee, petitioned the House of Representatives (petition EN0234) to do all within its power to return Julian home.
Pamela Anderson on Channel 9's Sixty Minutes last night says what we all need and want, "Okay well Scot, get Julian his passport back and take him back Home to Australia and be proud of him".
I ask the Prime Minister to do all within his power to return Julian home before Julian's situation becomes irreversible tragedy.
Yours sincerely,
John Shipton
